WE SAID ENOUGH: DEMANDS END TO PERVASIVE HARASSMENT CULTURE

Last Tuesday, 147 brave women co-signed a letter condemning the pervasive culture of sexual discrimination and harassment in California politics. The number of co-signers has doubled and continues to grow. Following national media, women across the country have reached out to We Said Enough requesting assistance. Additionally, thousands have visited www.wesaidenough.com to join the movement and say “Enough.” Many brave women have shared their experiences describing a devastating spectrum of harassment and assault. This includes:

• Degrading and demeaning remarks
• Sexual harassment
• Threatened employment status
• Propositioning quid-pro-quo sexual arrangements
•  Stalking and menacing
• Sexual assault, including unsolicited hugging, kissing and groping, indecent exposure, forced oral copulation and rape

This is unacceptable.

The current structure has - and continues - to fail. Decades of structural harassment and abuse cannot be repaired with a quick fix.

Californians deserve a legislature and political system as ideal and decent as the people they serve. We strive for equality in the workplace with zero tolerance for discrimination, harassment or abuse. We need new laws with teeth, accountability, disclosure and independent review of claims.

We Said Enough will soon convene forums to hear from members of the California Capitol community. We will invite stakeholders and outside experts to help shape real reform. Together,we will outline a plan of action for improving how complaints are reported, investigated, and addressed.
